Siemens S7-300 and S5 End-of-Life: Spare-Part Strategy and Migration Options for Plants in Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia

Short answerSiemens stopped selling S7-300 and ET 200M in October 2023; spare parts remain available until roughly 2033 but prices rise and lead times stretch every year. S5 has had no manufacturer support since about 2005. If a machine will run more than three more years, plan a staged migration to S7-1500 using TIA Portal and reuse the field wiring through ET 200SP or IM 153; if less, buy one tested spare of each module type now – CPU, PS307, the signal modules and the CP – and keep a verified program backup. HOANTRANTDH stocks thousands of S7-300 and S5 items for ASEAN plants.

What “end of life” means in practice

Siemens product phase-out follows a fixed pattern: product cancellation notice → end of sales → spare-part phase (typically 10 years) → end of support. For S7-300 the end-of-sales date was 1 October 2023; for most S5 modules the spare-part phase ended around 2005–2010. In the spare-part phase you can still order new modules, but allocation is limited, prices increase 10–30 % per year and delivery is often 12–20 weeks. In ASEAN, where authorised distributors prioritise current products, the effective lead time can be longer. Many plants built by Japanese, Korean and European OEMs between 1998 and 2015 are affected – electronics assembly in Thailand, automotive in Rayong and Karawang, palm oil and cement in Indonesia and Malaysia.

Which modules fail first

  • Power supplies PS307 (6ES7 307) – electrolytic capacitors, especially in panels above 40 °C.
  • CPU batteries / memory cards – MMC cards (6ES7 953) wear out; CPUs with lost programs are the most common line-down call.
  • Relay output modules SM 322 (6ES7 322-1HF/1HH) – contact wear.
  • Analog modules SM 331/332 – damaged by surges on 4–20 mA loops without isolators.
  • Communication processors CP 343-1 / CP 342-5 – and the PROFIBUS connectors around them.

Option A – Extend life with a spares kit

For machines with less than about three years of remaining use, or where re-validation would be costly (pharma, food safety), the economical path is a cold-spare kit: one unit of each CPU, PS, SM, CP and IM type, the memory card and a programming cable, plus a verified STEP 7 project backup stored off the machine. Buy now rather than during a stoppage. Our Siemens catalogue lists more than 2,000 6ES7 part numbers and the remaining S5 (6ES5) stock with condition and lead time.

Option B – Staged migration to S7-1500

  1. Inventory and backup – hardware configuration, firmware versions, program and HMI project.
  2. Convert the program with the TIA Portal migration tool; expect manual work on absolute addressing, system functions and communication blocks.
  3. Keep the field wiring – replace the CPU with an S7-1500 and connect the existing S7-300 I/O racks via IM 153 (PROFIBUS) or move to ET 200SP front-connector adapters; both avoid re-terminating hundreds of wires.
  4. Replace the HMI (6AV6 panels are also discontinued) with Comfort/Unified panels; convert the WinCC project.
  5. Cut over during a planned stop of 1–3 days per line, with the old CPU kept as fallback.

A staged migration typically costs 3–10 times a spares kit but resets the lifecycle for 15–20 years, adds diagnostics and OPC UA connectivity, and removes the growing cyber-security exposure of unsupported controllers.

S5 systems: a special case

SIMATIC S5 (6ES5 CPUs 95U/100U/115U/135U/155U) is beyond any manufacturer support. New-old-stock is rare; most available units are refurbished and tested. If an S5 machine is critical, start the S7-1500 migration now and use refurbished S5 cards only as a bridge. Programming requires STEP 5 on legacy Windows – keep a working laptop image.
