Overview
The Balluff BIS M system is an industrial HF RFID platform (13.56 MHz, ISO 15693) for identifying workpiece carriers, tools and pallets on assembly lines. The BIS M-400-045-001-07-S4 (order code BIS00HU) is a compact M18 read/write head with a range of 20–30 mm depending on the data carrier, connected via M12 to a BIS M processor unit or directly to an IO-Link master using the BIS M-4xx IO-Link variants. Data carriers from 2 kB to 128 kB in disc, coin and tool-holder formats store product or process data on the carrier itself, so the line keeps working if the network is interrupted. Processors are available for PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, PROFIBUS and serial, and the heads are IP67 for use on machines.
Key features
- HF RFID 13.56 MHz, ISO 15693, read/write; range 20–30 mm with Balluff data carriers
- M18 × 1 housing, M12 connector, IP67; mounts like an inductive sensor
- Works with BIS M processors (PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, PROFIBUS, serial) or IO-Link heads
- Data carriers 2 kB–128 kB in disc, coin, tool-holder and high-temperature formats
- Decentralised data on the carrier: product tracking survives network loss
Typical applications
- Workpiece-carrier identification on assembly lines
- Tool identification on CNC machines (tool-holder tags)
- Pallet and container tracking in intralogistics
- Traceability in electronics and automotive production

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a processor unit?
Standard BIS M heads connect to a BIS M processor that provides the fieldbus interface. If you already have IO-Link masters, choose the IO-Link head variant and skip the processor.
What is the advantage of storing data on the carrier?
Each pallet or tool carries its own process data, so stations can work autonomously and the line continues even if the server or network is down; the data is also readable anywhere a head is installed.
Is the BIS M head available from stock, and what is the lead time?
Typically 2–3 weeks for heads, processors and data carriers. We confirm with the quotation.
