- ATEX
- IECEx
- SIL2
- HART 7

Overview
The Rosemount 5408 is Emerson's two-wire non-contacting radar for liquids, using FMCW technology at 26 GHz for a stronger return signal and more robust measurement in turbulent, foaming or vapour-laden tanks than pulse radar of the same frequency. Accuracy is ±2 mm with measuring ranges up to 40 m, and the device is certified for SIL2/3 overfill prevention loops. The Smart Meter Verification and Power Advisory diagnostics report antenna fouling and loop power problems before they cause a lost measurement. Antenna options include cone (316L or Alloy), process-seal flush PTFE and parabolic for long ranges; the example string is a 3-inch cone antenna with HART and ATEX intrinsically safe approval.
Key features
- FMCW 26 GHz two-wire radar with higher signal-to-noise ratio than pulse radar
- Accuracy ±2 mm, measuring range up to 40 m, update rate 1 s
- Cone, process-seal (flush PTFE) and parabolic antennas; bypass/still-pipe mode
- Smart Meter Verification, Power Advisory and echo-curve diagnostics via HART 7
- SIL2 (SIL3 redundant) per IEC 61508; ATEX, IECEx, FM, CSA; overfill prevention per API 2350
Typical applications
- Storage tanks for fuels, solvents and chemicals
- Reactor and buffer vessels with agitation and foam
- Overfill prevention and high-level alarms
- Water reservoirs and open basins

Frequently asked questions
What is the advantage of FMCW over pulse radar at the same frequency?
FMCW transmits continuously and extracts level from the frequency difference, which yields a stronger return signal. In practice the 5408 keeps measuring through foam, condensation and agitator blades where a pulse radar may lose the echo.
Can the 5408 be used for overfill prevention?
Yes. The 5408:SIS version is certified to IEC 61508 SIL2 (SIL3 in redundant use) and supports proof testing per API 2350 without emptying the tank.
Is the Rosemount 5408 available from stock, and what is the lead time?
Typical factory lead time is 4–6 weeks; cone-antenna HART versions are often faster. We confirm with the quotation.
